Should I Epoxy My Basement Floor?

Should I Epoxy My Basement Floor?

It’s helpful not to overlook the option of epoxy coatings when considering flooring options for your basement. The fact is that epoxies provide many benefits over other flooring materials that make it particularly suitable for a basement environment. This article details some of epoxy properties for you to know whether it is the right option for your home.

Understanding Epoxy for Your Basement Floor

As a byproduct of industrial polymers, epoxy floor coatings will create a durable and appealing floor. Choose epoxy to cover a concrete floor that is time-proven as a floor covering in millions of homes. You can create a smoother surface by covering damaged or rough concrete foundations by using epoxy flooring, and epoxy floor repair products. Epoxy coatings are robust and durable as they were formulated for commercial and industrial use, but are now available from Armorpoxy for residential use. They are resistant to most chemicals and can resist exposure to virtually anything found in a home, including flooded basements.

Provide a Durable and Strong Basement Floor Coating

Durability is the essential feature of a basement for many homeowners. No one wants to revisit their basement renovation project after a year or two because there are signs of wear on the floor they chose. And because of its durability, epoxy has become a popular choice among homeowners. With a high-quality epoxy basement floor, you can get many years of use without worrying about your floor wearing or peeling from the underlying surface.

Make It Easy to Clean Your Basement

Life becomes more comfortable when you have an easy-to-clean floor, whether you want to use your basement to store items you rarely use or expand the living space in your home. An epoxy-coated floor does not dust or retain dirt like bare concrete. If you are looking to use little effort and time to keep your basement clean, a fantastic option is epoxy flooring. You can quickly sweep or vacuum dust and dirt as well as clean up any spills using a damp mop. Because epoxy coatings are impermeable any fluid spills will sit on top of the floor and can be easily wiped away with a towel or cloth.

Protect Floor from Moisture

Since epoxy coatings are waterproof, they can help protect the substrate beneath it from moisture build up. It is vital to protect the floor from humidity against mildew and mold if your basement is damp. With epoxy coatings, you will have the security of knowing if you ever had a water spill or leak your floor will be able to withstand it. Please note that if your floor has a moisture problem, best to test the surface first with a simple to use and inexpensive Moisture Test Kit to check the amount of moisture before proceeding. Proper preparation using an epoxy coating prevents future peeling or problems.

Decorative Options

Epoxy floor coatings are available in many styles and looks including solid colors, shimmery ‘metallic’ looks, decorative flake looks, terrazzo looks, and quartz sand. All of these looks are beautiful and long-lasting.

Thanks for your information on epoxy. My basement is currently unfinished. I think I would like my basement better if we get the floor coated.

My basement was flooded from hurricane Ida. I had luxury vinyl tiles before and am looking at epoxy paint. Is this flood proof?

      Hi Alice,

Most epoxies offer great floor protection against a flood in a basement however they are not 100% fool proof. You would still want to remove any sitting water ASAP.

      Thanks,
