Super Low VOC (Volatile Organic Compounds) are generally considered to be where the coating has a rating of less than 50 g/Litre (L) of solvents. The less solvent in a coating, the less that evaporates and ‘smells’, a process called outgassing. The higher the outgassing level, the more it would affect the air quality.
Generally water based or high solids coatings have lower VOC levels. Standard ‘low’ VOC levels are considered to be less than 250 g/l for standard coatings and 340 g/l for industrial coatings. Traditional ‘oil based’ and high solvent coatings would run in the 350-400+ g/l.
