How to Know When Epoxy Fails?

Has your epoxy failed you? Or have you failed your epoxy?

There is an answer and solution to every situation, whatever the situation is. The most likely explanations for an epoxy floor coating failure are that the floor wasn’t properly prepared, the epoxy floor coating being used is poor-quality water-based or another low-grade type of epoxy, and the epoxy was also not regarded for the type of traffic on it, and/or the floor has a problem such as moisture, oil stains, corrosion, or granular concrete with exposed aggregate.

Here we discuss some scenarios that explain what an epoxy failure looks like:

Air Outgassing onto the surface in the form of small bubbles

Your basic concrete can be a porous substance. Thus, implying that air can pass through the surface.

During the curing phase of the installation, air can escape from the concrete if the floor is not correctly prepared, primed, and sealed. The temperature of the mixture keeps on rising as the epoxy coating cures. As a result, the air within the concrete heats up, causing it to swell and create air bubbles here between the concrete and the coating.

An indented surface with blisters and caters. 

Blisters are substantial bubbles with trapped air inside. On the other hand, craters are formed when bubbles rupture and leave a depression inside the epoxy surface, and they can be visually unappealing.

Out-gassing from the bottom can generate large blisters and craters in improperly built concrete that is porous and contains air.

When the film and flow are prominent on your floor. 

A poorly installed floor’s film and flow characteristics stand apparent almost immediately. The result is dingy and uneven. Because when the epoxy coat is applied too cold or too hot, such an event can happen. It can also occur when too much air passes across a curing surface.

The surface is tacky, and there are patches of “soft” areas.

 These two issues are caused by incorrect mixing and inconsistent temperature changes. The resin to hardener ratio is off, resulting in a sticky surface or a soft area.

Visible signs of a premature Surface Degradation. 

When the coating is not correctly blended or perhaps an out-of-date product is utilized during the process, this happens. Floor preparation is necessary if you want your floor to survive a long time. Premature floor failure can be due to sloppy floor preparation and is a more common mistake.

Oil, grease, chemicals, moisture, and filth must all be removed from the concrete surface before applying the epoxy coating. Epoxy coatings will never adhere correctly to a dirty, oily, or grease-covered floor.
